- <p> DIED. DOMENICO MODUGNO, 66, singer and songwriter; of a heart
- attack; on the island of Lampedusa, off Sicily. Born in southern
- Italy, Modugno took top prize at the 1958 San Remo music festival
- for Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu (In the Blue, Painted in Blue),
- a song inspired by a Chagall painting. That summer the upbeat
- tune swept the globe, making the mustachioed troubadour an unlikely
- star on the Ed Sullivan Show and in nightclubs. Ultimately 22
- million copies of Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu were sold worldwide,
- recorded by some 200 artists, including Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald
- and Dean Martin. Modugno wrote other songs, worked in movies,
- and even served in the Italian Parliament, but nothing ever
- equaled the sensation of Nel Blu,--known in the U.S. by the
- word repeated in its compulsively singable refrain: Volare.
